Sakha republic looks to Tu-214 and SJ-100 for air transport development

United Aircraft reveals fleet agreement with Siberian region during St Petersburg forum.
Russia’s United Aircraft has signed an agreement with the government of Siberia’s Sakha republic covering development of air transport services in the Arctic and eastern regions of the country.

As part of the agreement the republic’s leadership has expressed interest in purchasing three Tupolev Tu-214 and five Yakovlev SJ-100 aircraft.

These aircraft would be delivered over the course of 2027-28.

The pact was signed during a St Petersburg international economic forum.

Sakha carrier Yakutia had previously indicated that it could use the Tu-214 for fleet modernisation.

United Aircraft has been working to revive production of Tu-214 passenger aircraft in parallel with the development of new types including the Yakovlev MC-21, SJ-100, and Ilyushin Il-114-300.

“For [Sakha], with its vast territory and challenging climate, aviation is vital,” says the republic’s head, Aisen Nikolaev.

He says the addition of Tu-214s and SJ-100s will “improve transport accessibility”.

“This is an important step for the region’s socio-economic development and improving the quality of life of [the republic’s] residents,” says Nikolaev.

United Aircraft is continuing certification efforts for the SJ-100, the Aviadvigatel PD-8 engine for which has newly been approved, while an import-substituted version of the Tu-214 was certified last year.
