Three yachts, all around 36 metres, and at first glance remarkably similar. But once you look at how they use their volume, how they perform and what each builder has prioritised, they turn out to be three very different propositions.

In this comparison, David Seal takes a closer look at the Sirena 118, Sanlorenzo SL120A and Amer 120, three yachts he saw at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

The Sirena 118 measures 36 metres, with a 7.8-metre beam and 279 GT. She combines a fast-displacement hull with a more long-distance approach to cruising, while offering considerable interior volume and the possibility of an owner’s suite extending over two decks, with a private waterside retreat and direct access to the sea.

The Sanlorenzo SL120A takes a very different approach. At 36.92 metres and around 280 GT, her asymmetric main-deck layout allows the interior to extend further outboard on one side. Twin MTU engines producing more than 5,200 hp in total give her a cruising speed of around 23 knots and a maximum speed of 27 knots.

Then there is the Amer 120, slightly smaller in overall volume but with a strong emphasis on outdoor living. Her engineering is different again, using four Volvo Penta D13 engines connected to four IPS drives, giving around 4,000 hp in total and a top speed of approximately 26 to 27 knots.

David compares the dimensions, gross tonnage, accommodation, deck layouts, engines, speed, range and fuel capacity of all three to see what those differences actually mean for an owner.

Highlights:
– Sirena 118: 36m, 279 GT and 7.8m beam
– Sanlorenzo SL120A: 36.92m, around 280 GT and asymmetric layout
– Amer 120: 35.5m with four Volvo Penta engines and IPS drives
– Three different approaches to interior and exterior space
– Standard and optional performance on the Sirena 118
– 27-knot performance from the Sanlorenzo
– Four-engine IPS configuration on the Amer
– Range and fuel capacity compared
– Fast-displacement versus planing hulls
– Three very different approaches to cruising

Three yachts of almost exactly the same length, but three very different ideas about what a 36-metre motor yacht should be.

Which would you choose: the Sirena 118, Sanlorenzo SL120A or Amer 120?
