Vietnam 787-9 apparently damaged after laboured take-off from Munich

Hanoi-bound aircraft returned to German hub after holding for 2h.
Investigators are probing an apparent laboured take-off by a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 at Munich, which appears to have resulted in substantial damage to the twinjet.

While verified information remains scarce, the aircraft had been departing runway 26L while operating flight VN34 to Hanoi on 15 August.

Video footage circulating on social media purporting to show the take-off shows the aircraft throwing up dust as it rotated after a prolonged full-length take-off roll.

Runway 26L has a length of 4,000m.

The aircraft remained airborne for about 2h, carrying out circuits over Munich before landing, having made three approaches to runway 26R.

No details have been released on the number of occupants.

The aircraft involved (VN-A867) is a 10-year old airframe powered by GE Aerospace GEnx engines.

Images on social media – which FlightGlobal has not yet authenticated – claim to show shredded main landing-gear tyres and tail-strike damage to the fuselage underside.

Munich airport has issued a NOTAM stating that runway 08L/26R is closed.

German investigation authority and Vietnam Airlines have yet to issue any clarifying statement on the occurrence.
