The UK will be given unrivalled access to Ukraine’s combat-experienced database.
Up to 12 UK companies will gain unprecedented access to battlefield data from Ukraine’s Avengers AI labs, which contains over 6 million sensor detections, including air defence systems and UAVs.
The first of its kind deal between Ukraine and an international partner will grant the UK access to daylight and thermal imagery collected by uncrewed aerial systems in Ukraine. That data will be used to develop new AI models in the UK that can be used to control drone swarms.
The aim, according to London, is to pursue technology that lets drone swarms keep working when communications are degraded or satellite navigation is unavailable.
Led by the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) Rapid AI Delivery (RAID) Taskforce, the inaugural competition under the UK-Ukraine AI partnership will select participating companies in the coming weeks to accelerate testing and deployment.
“It is exactly the kind of practical partnership the Taskforce was set up to drive, supporting our ally Ukraine while strengthening sovereign capability here in Britain,” says Kanishka Narayan, the government’s AI minister.
Industry proposals must address four key focus areas for technological development, including autonomous target recognition, distributed decision-making, adaptive mission execution and collaborative sensing and information fusion. The work is also required to meet both British and Ukrainian defence requirements.
Access to Ukrainian data gives the UK a rare advantage that standard testing cannot replicate. Insights from more than four years of combat in Ukraine have been gathered in an environment that has become a testbed for drone warfare, which has upended traditional military doctrine.
The data sharing initiative is part of a broader British effort to transform drone capabilities, under a £5 billion ($6.6 billion) investment package announced in June 2026 aimed at developing and fielding new military systems that will supplement traditional hardware like RAF fighter jets and British Army attack helicopters.
