HAECO, JAL among partners for new Vietnam MRO joint venture

The new facility at Van Don airport is expected to be operational by late-2028.

Hong Kong-based MRO giant HAECO has partnered with Japan Airlines, Vietnam’s Sun Group, as well as Toyota Tsusho, to establish a new maintenance facility in Vietnam’s Van Don international airport.

The four companies signed the joint venture agreement – valued at around $360 million – on 16 June, paving the way for the construction of a 170,000 sq m (1,830,000 sq ft) maintenance facility.

It will comprise a four-bay widebody hangar, with “additional flexibility” for narrowbody maintenance. The complex will also include annex buildings, engineering spare and material storerooms, as well as training facilities.

The MRO facility is expected to be operational by late-2028.

HAECO says the latest investment forms part of its “long-term growth strategy in Asia”. Meanwhile, JAL says the project “brings together the strengths of leading companies across the aviation, maintenance and industrial sectors”.

According to the partnership agreement, JAL will contribute “operational and maintenance expertise based on safety and quality”, and will be responsible for human resource development. Toyota will contribute its expertise in managing and developing global supply chains, it adds.

Van Don airport, located in north-east Vietnam, is built and operated by the Sun Group. In the future, it is also expected to be an operating hub for new Sun Group-owned carrier Sun PhuQuoc Airways.

The companies note that MRO demand in Vietnam is growing on the back of expansion of air traffic demand.

“This project aims to address such structural supply-demand gaps, while enhancing aircraft maintenance capabilities in Vietnam and increasing technical self-reliance,” they state.
