Ethiopian signs for ten more 777 Freighters, including 777-8Fs

The airline now holds outstanding orders with Boeing for 18 777s.
Ethiopian Airlines has ordered another ten Boeing 777 Freighters, including two 777Fs and eight of Boeing’s in-development 777-8F.

The US manufacturer disclosed the orders on 30 September, noting the deal builds on a prior 2024 order by Ethiopian for eight 777-9 passenger jets.

Ethiopian had been the first African customer to order the 777-9 and is also now the first on the continent to order the 777-8F, Boeing says.

Neither jet is certificated. Boeing aims to have the 777-9 passenger aircraft cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration this year and to begin delivering it next year.

Boeing plans to have the 777-8F certified within several years of the 777-9.

“This agreement marks another significant milestone in strengthening Ethiopian Airlines’ cargo capabilities while supporting the continued expansion of our global network,” says Ethiopian group chief executive Mesfin Tasew.

“These aircraft will play a vital role in facilitating global trade, strengthening supply chain connectivity and further reinforcing Ethiopia’s position as a leading cargo gateway between Africa and international markets.”

The airline already operates a large Boeing fleet that includes 27 737 Max 8s, 12 777Fs, nine 777 passenger jets and 29 787s, according to fleet-data provider Cirium.

Ethiopian has outstanding orders for another 18 777s, 26 787-9s and 42 737 Max 8s, and for 17 Airbus A350-900s, Cirium shows.
