Order top-up follows April announcement for 14 new jets.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines has ordered five Boeing 787-10s and six 737 Max 8s, adding to an existing commitment for 14 jets announced earlier this year.
The national carrier and Boeing announced the order on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York. No financial details, or delivery timeline, were disclosed.
Biman is an existing operator of Boeing jets, with a fleet comprising 737NGs, 777s and 787s.
In late April, Biman placed its largest order to date, signing for 10 787s and four 737 Max 8s. That deal, valued at $3.7 billion, also comprised the airline’s first order for the larger 787-10, which Biman says will serve its Middle East network.
Airline chair Rumee Hossain says the order top-up is an “important step” in the airline’s ongoing fleet renewal and network expansion.
He adds: “As the national flag carrier, we remain committed to developing Biman’s network and capabilities in a manner that responds to the connectivity needs of the people of Bangladesh, our expatriate community, business and tourism. This agreement is one part of a broader, carefully considered plan to strengthen the country’s international connectivity in the years ahead.”
Biman’s order also came hours after Boeing and Turkish Airlines finalised a provisional agreement to order up to 150 737 Max aircraft. The Star Alliance operator is taking 100 firm Max 8s and 50 optioned aircraft.
