SAA names new acting chief as predecessor put on immediate special leave

Reasons for the decision, just four months after Matshela Seshibe’s appointment, remain undisclosed.
South African Airways has placed acting group chief Matshela Seshibe on special leave, pending the results of an internal investigation.

The operator has not disclosed the reason for the decision, but states that it reflects an “unwavering commitment to the highest standards of good governance, accountability, integrity and leadership”.

SAA has named chief legal officer Koekie Mbeki as acting group chief, with immediate effect, to ensure continuity.

Formerly the head of catering arm Air Chefs, Seshibe was appointed only four months ago after the resignation of John Lamola, who oversaw SAA’s recovery as it emerged from business rescue and the Covid-19 pandemic.

He had previously held positions at various major firms including Unilever, SABMiller and Coca-Cola.

“We recognise the responsibility entrusted to us and will continue to act decisively and in the best interests of the airline and all of its stakeholders,” says SAA chair Sedzani Mudau.

SAA adds that Mbeki has “extensive institutional knowledge” and has gained experienced through 10 years of service with the company.
