The Galapagos Islands are unlike almost anywhere else you can visit by yacht. You cannot simply arrive, choose an anchorage and decide where to go the following morning. Almost everything is carefully regulated, from cruising routes and landing sites to the number of visitors allowed ashore.
And that is part of what makes the islands so extraordinary.
In this video, David Seal explores the Galapagos, an archipelago approximately 1,000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador, where wildlife has developed in remarkable isolation. Giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, penguins and sea lions are just some of the species that make these islands such a fascinating destination.
David looks at how visiting the Galapagos by yacht differs from cruising in the Mediterranean or Caribbean. Approved itineraries, licensed naturalist guides and strict environmental regulations mean that choosing the right yacht and route is particularly important.
He also introduces three very different charter yachts available through Northrop & Johnson.
INTEGRITY is a 43-metre yacht built by Gulf Craft, accommodating up to 16 guests in nine cabins. With years of experience operating in the Galapagos, she offers a traditional expedition experience, complete with kayaks, Zodiac tenders, a Jacuzzi and an observation deck.
TRIBUTE FREDDY’S LEGACY is a 42-metre yacht that has undergone a major transformation with an emphasis on lower-impact cruising. Her technical improvements include oil-free propulsion and heat recovery systems, while two naturalist guides allow guests to explore in smaller groups. Part of the charter revenue also supports conservation, education and community projects in Ecuador.
AQUAMARE, at 49 metres, is the largest of the three. Built by CRN and adapted for Galapagos cruising, she offers a more familiar superyacht experience, with an 80-square-metre owner’s suite, beach club, Jacuzzi and generous exterior spaces. David also looks at the yacht’s South American-inspired cuisine, developed with Peruvian chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino.
But this video is not only about chartering a yacht in the Galapagos.
David also introduces the Blue Corridor, an initiative connecting the Galapagos Islands with Los Roques in Venezuela through the Panama Canal, with specialist yacht services at both ends. Together with Ricardo Arenas in the Galapagos and Alejandro Linares in Los Roques, he explains how yacht owners, captains, managers and charter brokers can explore two very different archipelagos as part of a wider cruising programme.
David also considers the practicalities of bringing a privately owned yacht to the Galapagos, including local agents, biosecurity inspections and the restrictions that apply to visiting vessels.
Finally, he looks at the best times of year to visit, why wildlife should influence the choice of itinerary, and how the right naturalist guides can make an enormous difference to the experience.
