Romania’s Tarom introduces its first 737 Max

Flag-carrier bringing in four of the twinjets in fleet-modernisation effort.
Romanian flag-carrier Tarom has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737 Max, marking the entry of the type into the east European country.

The Max 8 – registered YR-BGO – is part of a fleet-modernisation programme for the airline, and has been leased through CDB Aviation.

It arrived in Bucharest on 8 September having been flown from Seattle via Rejkjavik. The aircraft has been conducting preliminary familiarisation flights at the Romanian capital.

“Fleet renewal and efficient operational capacity are essential components of our restructuring plan, enabling us to achieve operational efficiency,” says Tarom chief Cristian Anghel.

“This aircraft’s advanced technology and low environmental footprint align perfectly with our vision for sustainable operations.”

Tarom is acquiring four Max 8s. Two of them are being leased from CDB Aviation, the Irish-based subsidiary of China Development Bank Financial Leasing. The second will arrive at the end of September.

The airline says the remaining two Max 8s will arrive in 2027.

Tarom’s fleet already includes four older 737 airframes, as well as ATR turboprops.

All 737 Max jets are powered by CFM International Leap-1B engines.

Tarom has previously been an operator of the relatively rare Airbus A318.
