Flag-carrier introducing additional narrowbodies as it continues post-Assad recovery.
Syrian Airlines is acquiring a pair of Airbus A320s as it continues its recovery following the fall of the Bashar Al-Assad government.
The airline says it took delivery of the first of two “newly purchased aircraft” at Damascus on 29 August.
Registered YK-AKI, the jet arrived from the Azerbaijani capital Baku.
It appears to have been previously operated by Heston Airlines on behalf of Azerbaijan Airlines.
Syrian Airlines says it expects to receive the second A320, YK-AKJ, before the end of September. The jet is “preparing for the painting stage”.
Both will have a 156-seat layout in two classes, including 12 seats in the business cabin.
“Each aircraft underwent comprehensive inspection, maintenance, and technical evaluation,” the carrier states, to ensure their “complete readiness and compliance with the highest internationally-recognised safety and airworthiness standards”.
Syrian Airlines adds that they mark “only the beginning” of a larger plan to modernise and expand the fleet.
The airline has not given details of the aircraft purchase.
But Qatari-led partners last year disclosed plans to redevelop Damascus airport and, as part of the deal, provide financing for Syrian Airlines to acquire up to 10 A320s.
