LATAM selects SES satellite wi-fi for more than 60 aircraft

Satellite-based solution will be installed on LATAM’s A320neos, A321XLRs and E195-E2s.
LATAM Airlines is to install SES’ multi-orbit satellite-based in-flight connectivity system on more than 60 of its Airbus A320neo, A321XLR and Embraer 195-E2 jets.

The Luxembourg-based satellite provider’s electronically-steered array (ESA) antenna system switches between Eutelsat’s OneWeb low-Earth orbit (LEO) and SES’ geostationary (GEO) satellites to provide low-latency global coverage.

SES says the aircraft will be equipped “in the coming years”. It did not immediately respond to questions from FlightGlobal about when the first aircraft will be equipped and how long the rollout will take.

The system is only available as a retrofit option but SES is working towards making the solution available as a line-fit option across both Airbus and Boeing platforms, as reported by FlightGlobal in April.

It is not the first time LATAM has selected SES as its in-flight wi-fi provider; the airline previously equipped more than 200 of its A320-family aircraft with SES’ 2Ku service.

“By bringing next-generation multi-orbit connectivity to more of our fleet, we will offer our passengers a faster, more reliable onboard internet experience, helping them stay connected wherever they fly,” says LATAM Airlines Group vice-president customers Paulo Miranda.

SES president of mobility Mike DeMarco adds that LATAM’s passengers “will soon benefit from reliable, multi-orbit satellite connectivity that will provide the same fast and dependable internet access they enjoy at home, no matter where or when they fly”.

Last month, Mexican low-cost carrier Viva (formerly VivaAerobus) began installing SES’ multi-orbit system on its entire fleet of Airbus narrowbodies. The airline is retrofitting the solution to 60 of its A320s and A320neos and 40 of its A321s and A321neos.

LATAM expects to end this year with a fleet of 410 aircraft. It says it received seven more A320neos, four A321neos and two Boeing 787-9s in the first half of 2026, and will received another 28 aircraft by year-end, including its first E195-E2s. The carrier expects to take delivery of its first A321XLR in 2027.
