Inquiry opens after Brasilia ends up in vegetation at northeastern airport
All the occupants of an Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia turboprop have escaped uninjured after a runway excursion at Mandera in Kenya.
The aircraft “veered off the runway” while landing on 24 April, following a service from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta airport.
Images from the scene show the Brasilia came to rest on rough ground, its nose and engines embedded in shrubbery.
They identify the airframe as the Kenyan-registered 5Y-EBB, operated by EBB Air.
Kenya Airports Authority says 32 passengers and four crew members were on board when the aircraft landed at 09:10.
It states that all the occupants were “safety evacuated” from the aircraft which stopped near the perimeter fence.
“All relevant emergency response protocols were promptly activated,” the authority says, adding that it co-ordinated its response with emergency services and partner agencies.
It adds that it “reaffirms its unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, and operational excellence across all its facilities”.
The extent of any damage to the aircraft has not been disclosed, and there is no information on weather conditions at the time.
Mandera is located in the far northeast of Kenya, close to the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia.
